Americana Baby

T his is my Americana Baby Afghan.
I think this is the proudest I have been
for one of my designs
since I designed the baby samplers
for
Allison,
Lauren,
Chris
and Matt.
In all 4 of those
my mind's eye saw what it wanted
and when I finished the samplers
there was the vision
I had imagined.

I achieved the same sense
of pride
and accomplishment
in this afghan.
T hese were the requirements I set for myself:
1. Make an American Flag-ish afghan out of Granny Squares.
2. Connect each one to the previous one in each row as I went along.
3. When on the 2d row and beyond
a. connect to the previous round
b. previous square in the round
4. Have blue squares with 5 pointed stars in their centers.
5. Have a border that complimented the flag.
E verything went GREAT
until I tried to make a
5-pointed white star
in the center of
a blue Granny Square.
5 Points
evenly arranged
inside a 4 sided figure
didn't look the greatest.
So,
back to the drawing board.

What I ended up doing was :
1. make the Granny Squares just like I made all the others
2. attache them in the same manner
3. make 5 pointed stars out of beige yarn and whip-stitch them into place.

WA-LA ! ! ! ! !
or however the magicians say it!
I had now accomplished
my 1st 4 goals.
Now it was onto the border from hell ! ! ! ! !
The border wasn't bad
once I had figured a way to alternate yarn
and not get it so twisted
that it was untwistable.
THAT was achieved easier than I had expected.

All in all, it makes me grin every time I look at it.
