Blowing Off

I never have understood graduating from anything but high school and college. I mean, pre-school . . .have you ever heard of a pre-school failure?

I always thought that high school graduation was to show that, yes, you made it . . . 12 years of schooling and you stuck it out (13 if you were lucky enough to have kindergarten) . . . now, welcome to the wonderful world of working to support yourself.

Same idea for college, if you were lucky enough to be able to go to college. And maybe that was part of the college graduation . . .yes, you DID make it and you are one of the lucky ones who was able to earn and receive a college degree.

When I graduated . . I know, it was between the cave man and chariot days, some of my friends were the 1st in their family to graduate from high  school . . .now THAT Is something to celebrate.

Then, in college, I wasn't the only one who was a 1st generation of a family to go and graduate.  I didn't go through graduation then . . . all of my friends were either underclassmen or had graduated . . . but as soon as that diploma showed up at the house I was showing it off to EVERYONE!

Sorry to h ave blown off . . . but, this "graduating" from one level into the next must be a part of the "me" generation attitude. Celebrate every minor accomplishment like it could qualify for a Nobel Prize, don't keep score in activities . . children might learn there is a difference between themselves and others, etc, etc, etc. The other day I heard the MOST outlandish of all . . schools that use red washcloths when cleaning up scraped knees, lost tooth, etc, so the child doesn't get scared of their own blood.

Heaven help these children when they find out they are not the be all and end all of the universe . . . I have seen children fall from the skies when this is discovered and it is NOT a pretty site . . . nor is it pretty when an adult discovers it later in life.

  1. I feel the same way as you, too. I graduated high school in 1989. So I don't know what "generation" that makes me. But, I think it is ridiculous. Graduation parties for a fifth grader?... (I was invited to one.)
