Niawanda Park Ice Bergs

We live on the Niagara River, midway between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, New York.  The Niagara River connects Lake Erie ti Lake Ontario. Due to the water intakes on the river, for all of the hydro power in this area, the Army Corp of Engineers place an Ice Boom across the river to keep the frozen water from Lake Erie from going down the river and damaging the intakes.

Look at the far right side of the lake . . . there is where the Niagara RIver starts.
Do you see the island surrounded by the river?
The island,  Grand Island, bends out to the right . . .
I am on the right bank in this location
taking pictures today.

This morning, they removed the boom. So now we have, what looks like, ice bergs have been calving up stream.

This is the Ice Boom.
The Corp of Engineers stretch it across the river before the ice forms.
The water flows below and the boom holds the frozen top of the lake.

We had to go to the park and get pictures. And, on the way out of the park, I saw a woodchuck scurrying up the hill to his burrow. So I also got two pictures of him peaking out at us.

That's Indy's butt in the picture.
Grand Island is in the background.

Don't they look like mini ice bergs . . . with more ice under water than above?

Isn't Mr Woodchuck adorable?

Still just checking out his kingdom.

  1. Sounds like a nice little trip. I love the water, and the groundhog is cute. :)
